When the Virginia Economic Developers Association (VEDA) Spring Conference comes to town, the Hampton Roads Alliance shows up — and shows out.
In April, Team Hampton Roads Alliance had the pleasure of welcoming economic development leaders from across Virginia to Newport News for the 2025 VEDA Spring Conference. The event gathered some of the brightest minds in economic development to discuss trends, strategies and partnerships shaping the future of the Commonwealth.
It also gave attendees a firsthand look at the innovation driving growth across the Hampton Roads region.
As part of the conference experience, participants toured three of Newport News’ most influential employers: Ferguson, Canon Virginia and the Virginia Tech Newport News Center. Each stop offered a powerful glimpse into the talent, technology and investment that define Hampton Roads’ economy today.
The tours kicked off at Ferguson’s impressive headquarters, where attendees were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at operations — including a remarkable display of art crafted from the very plumbing parts they sell, blending creativity with industry.
At Canon Virginia, visitors glimpsed the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing — so cutting edge, in fact, that an NDA was required. The company’s leadership in technology and innovation continues to serve as a cornerstone of the regional economy.
Finally, the Virginia Tech Newport News Center highlighted the region’s commitment to research, workforce development, and entrepreneurial growth. Conference-goers met with standout companies like ivWatch, pioneering IV safety technology for the healthcare sector, and ITA International, a government contractor supporting national security and economic resilience. Jefferson Lab, a global leader in nuclear physics research, also showcased the tech-driven momentum building across the region.
A common thread ran through every stop:
These organizations chose Newport News — and Hampton Roads — for its unmatched strategic advantages.
Anchored by proximity to the Port of Virginia, one of the busiest and most significant ports on the East Coast, Hampton Roads offers unparalleled connectivity for global trade, logistics and advanced manufacturing.
Canon’s decision decades ago to establish its U.S. operations in Newport News — becoming the first Japanese company to invest in the region — opened the door for waves of international investment that continue to shape the area’s economic landscape.
The 2025 VEDA Spring Conference was more than an event. It was a showcase of the powerful partnerships, visionary leadership, and innovative spirit that make Hampton Roads a catalyst for economic growth in Virginia and beyond.
