Hampton Roads is rich with regional assets, and I recently discovered another remarkable one. On a tour of the SWIFT (Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow) facility in Suffolk, I was struck by the innovation and impact of this project. Thanks to Bob Crum for organizing the visit that I attended along with my colleague Amy, and several economic development directors. SWIFT is not just another water treatment facility; it’s a forward-thinking solution aimed at addressing some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the Hampton Roads region.
SWIFT’s Role in Protecting Our Environment
SWIFT is designed to protect and preserve our region’s precious water resources. By taking highly treated water—water that would otherwise be discharged into the Elizabeth, James, or York rivers—and putting it through additional rounds of advanced treatment, SWIFT ensures that this water meets drinking water quality standards. The purified water is then added to the Potomac Aquifer, our region’s primary source of groundwater.
This process is crucial for several reasons:
